Following the death of the unmarried Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, James VI of Scotland relocated his court to London and became James I of England, settling inside the Royal Palace in Greenwich. Shortly after, golf was played in England. Blackheath provided the ideal playing conditions for the golfers who were said to have been members of his royal entourage.
